Djibouti Military


The defense encompasses (2009) 10,500 men enlisted and is organized into four regions with five infantry regiments, a naval section with five patrol boats and an air force section with two attack helicopters. Semi-military security forces amount to 3,000 men. The material is of varying origin. Defense costs decreased from 7.9% to 1.9% of GDP in 1985-2007.

A UN commission ruled that neighboring Eritrea was responsible for launching the regular combat operations that occurred with Djibouti in June 2008, and related areas from which strategic sea transport routes to the Red Sea can be controlled. The international presence has subsequently increased, and in 2009, there were 3,900 men from France with Djibouti territory from France with a naval infantry and an alien legionary regiment and 10 fighter aircraft. From the United States, there were 2,000 men from all four branches of defense and a naval base. Germany contributed 100 men and some sea surveillance aircraft.
