SOUTHEAST EUROPE
Southeastern Europe, the eastern Mediterranean and Turkey received their shape almost completely during the phase of the young Alpid mountain formation. The mountain ranges have high mountain character in their highest parts (including the Carpathians, Rhodopes, Taurus, Caucasus). In the east, within the mountainous landscape, there are large lakes such as Lake Van and Lake Urmia. The construction of large reservoirs on the upper reaches of the Euphrates indicates a central aspect and point of conflict for this region: the water supply. Narrow coastlineslead from the mountain ranges to the Mediterranean Sea and its marginal seas such as the Aegean and Adriatic Seas; numerous groups of small islands can be found here. Cyprus and Crete are the two largest islands in the eastern Mediterranean, and both have mountain character.

Exceptions within the mountainous landscapes are the wide-stretched landscapes of the Pannonian Basin and the Turkish Anatolia, which are framed by the Pontic Mountains and the Taurus, and are traversed by large rivers. Greater plains emerged on the coasts where large rivers deposited their sediments (Danube, Seyhan / Ceyhan). In the north the plains of the Eastern European lowlands are cut off, in the southeast the plains of the Arabian Peninsula.

The Mediterranean region is at great risk of earthquakes due to the active tectonic fault lines. For more information about the continent of Europe, please check eningbo.info.
