In April 2016, Pope Frans Ṃria visited the refugee camp in
Lesbos. The reason was that the EU had entered into an
agreement with Turkey to stop the flow of refugees from
Asia, so that refugees were interned in concentration camps
under similar conditions. Lesbos. Humanitarian organizations
such as Save the Children and Doctors Without Borders had
already withdrawn in protest with the EU and Turkey's breach
of the UN Refugee Convention. In solidarity with the
refugees, the Pope granted them asylum in the Vatican and
took them back to Rome.
In October 2016, the pope made a historic visit to Lund,
Sweden. The occasion was the run-up to the 500th year of the
Reformation, the following year and the purpose was to
bridge and reconcile after 500 years of conflict and war
between Catholics and Lutherans. In a joint statement, the
Pope and President of the Lutheran World Federation, Munib
A. Younan, stated that "the Reformation had given the Holy
Scriptures a more central place in the life of the Church."
The visit to Sweden was interesting as the country in the
17th century played a prominent role in the persecution and
execution of Catholics. Until the middle of the 20th
century, Catholics could not become doctors, teachers or
nuns in the country. The reason the pope just visited Lund.
