Belize Military

Belize is a small country located on the eastern coast of Central America. It is bordered by Mexico to the north, Guatemala to the south and west, and the Caribbean Sea to the east. The country covers an area of 22,966 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 387,879 people. Belize is a parliamentary democracy with an independent judiciary. Its military consists of the Belize Defense Force (BDF), which includes ground forces, naval forces, air wing, and police units. The BDF is responsible for defending Belize against external aggression and maintaining internal security. Additionally, it provides assistance to civil authorities in times of emergency or disasters. The BDF also participates in regional peacekeeping operations and contributes personnel to UN missions overseas. Defense

The defense includes (2009) 1,000 men enlisted and is organized into three battalions and some patrol boats but no fighter aircraft. The reserves amount to 700 people. Defense costs in 1985–2007 were about 1.4% of GDP. In 1994, Britain withdrew its former force of 1,500 men, including fighter aircraft, but still has about 30 men.
